Free Crochet Snowman Pattern

How is July already halfway over? I feel like it just started! We're now on week 3 of our Christmas In July event and it's time to share Sam the Snowman!

I started designing this pattern while sitting at a craft fair last November. I tried 3 different hats and couldn't get the fit and style right. Before I knew it December was over and I decided to put him away and try again later in the next year.

I pulled him out again in June and after 3 more hat tries it came together better than I imagined! His body and head are made as one piece. Plus, the facial features can be added just before closing the head. This means that his arms, nose and pieces of coal are the only part requiring sewing!

Yes, you heard that right. Hardly any pieces to sew! In these Summer months I find I am longing for quick makes since we are spending so much more time outdoors. This pattern is just that!

Feel free to mix up the yarn you use for added softness or texture. This pattern would be great made in Bernat Blanket Yarn or in a fuzzy Pipsqueak!

While designing this series of patterns I took your requests from the group to keep them small. They all range from 6-8 inches tall (Sam measures about 6 inches). Difference in tension may result in slightly taller or shorter animals but they should still be the perfect size for stuffing stockings this Winter!

Optional – I sewed my pieces of coal on after the body and head were stuffed and closed. If you prefer, they can be sewn on here before stuffing.

At the end of round 13 pinch the arm flat and make 4 SC across the top to close, fasten off and leave a long tail to sew onto the body.

Pieces of Coal –

With dark gray make 3

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 7 SC

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Hat –

We will be making the hat from the bottom up as a rectangular piece. Once complete, we will sew our ends together to form a circle and close the top to form our hat.

The first row is ribbed using an alternating FPDC and BPDC. Below is a step-by-step photo tutorial to walk you through these stitches.

Hat –

With accent color ch 42

Row 1: DC in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each across, ch 2 and turn (41)

Row 2: *FPDC into the first DC, BPDC into the next*, *rep across, ch 1 and turn (41)

Rows 3-9: HDC across, ch 1 and turn (41)

Fasten off with a long tail for sewing. With your tail fold your hat ends together and sew along the edges to form a circle. Pictures 1 & 2.

Next, we will close the top to form our hat. Using your tapestry needle weave in and out of each stitch across the top. As you gently pull your string it will cinch to close. Secure with a knot on the inside and weave in your ends. Pictures 3 & 4.

Assembly –

1. First, sew the arms onto the body at round 18.

2. Next, sew your pieces of coal centered on the body.

3. Lastly, place your hat onto your snowman

Your mini snowman is complete! I hope you have enjoyed making this pattern. Feel free to share your snowman with us in the group and join us next week for our last Christmas in July pattern!

  3. Just finished your snowman pattern, my first ever amigurumi project. I added a pompon to the hat and made her a little scarf in the same accent yarn. She’s so cute. Thanks for the free pattern!
