Free Crochet Mini Reindeer Pattern

Happy Friday! Today kicks off the first of four fun and free patterns for our Christmas in July event!

I'm so excited to introduce you to Rosie the Reindeer, she is a smaller version (8 inches tall!) of Ray the Reindeer from last year. Now you can make a whole family of reindeer!

While I've made her as a girl version you can easily change up the colors and exclude the eyelashes for an adorable boy version too!

If you'd like more information on the other patterns that will be shared throughout the month head over here for all of the details, materials and dates!

Rosie is made with her legs, body and head all as one piece. She's super quick to work up with no color changes and minimal sewing required!

If you've been on the fence about trying out amigurumi she's a great first pattern! Be sure to also check out our Tips to Amigurumi page to walk you through the basics and methods we'll be using below! You'll be 'hooked' before you know it!

To stay up to date on new pattern releases (including the remaining Christmas in July patterns) you can sign up for our newsletter here!

Be sure to also join the Grace and Yarn Crochet Group on Facebook! Share your work, ask questions and engage with others who love to crochet!

While designing this series of patterns I took your requests from the group to keep them small. They all range from 6-8 inches tall. Difference in tension may result in slightly taller or shorter animals but they should still be the perfect size for stuffing stockings this Winter!

Materials -

  • Size 4 worsted weight yarn (50g of light brown and small amount of white, dark brown and choice of color for cheeks and scarf)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook (These are my all time favorite hooks to use!)
  • 5mm crochet hook (scarf)
  • 9mm safety eyes
  • Black crochet/embroidery thread for eyelashes (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle (These work great for amigurumi!)
  • Stuffing
  • Stitch markers (A piece of scrap yarn does the trick!)

Abbreviations - US terminology

MC- Magic circle

SC- Single crochet

SC INC- Single crochet increase

INV DEC- Invisible decrease

HDC – Half double crochet

St(s)- Stitch(es)

NOTES -
- We will be using our 3.5mm crochet hook for each part apart from the scarf, which will use the 5mm.

- Slowly stuff as you go, you want it to be firm but not stretched. You will be working in the round; I like to use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round. You can find more tips on stuffing your amigurumi here!

- The legs, body and head will be made as one piece.

Mouth Piece –

With white

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Round 3: SC around (12)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing onto the head. With a small piece dark brown yarn and tapestry needle, make a few passes towards the top of the nose and across 2-3 stitches to form the nose.

Legs -

Make 2 – With light brown

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, repeat around (18)

Round 4: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, repeat around (24)

Round 5: SC around (24)

Round 6: SC in the first 6 sts, INV DEC 6 times, SC in the last 6 sts (18)

Round 7: SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC 6 times, SC in the last 3 sts (12)

Rounds 8-15: SC around (12)

Fasten off on the first leg only. When you complete the 2nd leg continue to round 16 to join the leg.

Round 16: Chain 3 and attach to the first leg with a SC. SC in the remaining stitches around the leg. When you reach the chain make a SC across each of the 3 chains, SC in the remaining stitches of the next leg and SC across each of the 3 chains again. You will have crocheted on each side of the chain. (30 SC) This completes your join and is where your next round will start.

Rounds 17-26 SC around (30)

Round 27: SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (24)

Round 28: SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (18)

Round 29: SC around (18)

Round 30: SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (12)

Round 31: SC around (12)

Here is where we will start the head

Round 32: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, repeat around (18)

Round 33: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, repeat around (24)

Round 34: SC in the first 3 sts, SC INC in the next, repeat around (30)

Round 35: SC in the first 4 sts, SC INC in the next, repeat around (36)

Round 36: SC in the first 11 sts, SC INC in the next, repeat around (39)

Rounds 37-41: SC around (39)

NOTE - Here is where we will attach the facial features. Place the safety eyes 5 stitches apart between rounds 39 and 40. (For a girl version, I recommend sewing on the eyelashes before securing your safety eyes).

Mouth Piece - Sew the mouth piece centered between the eyes with a small amount of stuffing.

Cheeks – With your tapestry needle and yarn for cheeks pass through one stitch on either side of your mouth piece and just under the eyes
.

Round 42: SC in the first 11 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (36)

Round 43: SC in the first 4 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (30)

Round 44: SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (24)

*Continue to stuff the head and neck firmly to avoid a wobbly head*

Round 45: SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (18)

Round 46: SC in the first stitch, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (12)

Round 47: INV DEC around (6)

Fasten off and sew remaining part closed, weave in your end

Ears-

Make 2 with light brown

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 7 SC

Rounds 2-3: SC around (7)

Round 4: SC INC in each st around (14)

Rounds 5-8: SC around (14)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing, fold ear in half and sew across to close the ear. This will create the indentation for the ear.

Antlers –

With dark brown make 2 stuffing lightly

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, repeat around (9)

Rounds 3-6: SC around (9)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Arms-

With light brown make 2 stuffing lightly at the bottom

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, repeat around (9)

Rounds 3-11: SC around (9)

At the end of round 11 pinch the arm flat and make 4 SC across the top to close, fasten off and leave a long tail to sew onto the body.

Scarf –

With color of choice and 5mm hook, chain 45. HDC into the 2nd chain from your hook and in each chain across. (44)

Assembly -

- First, sew the antlers onto the head starting at the 2nd round and ending around the 4th round.

- Next, sew the ears just outside of the antlers.

- Sew the arms on the body centered with the head at round 29.

- Lastly, tie the scarf around the neck.
