Marshall the Frog - A Free Crochet Pattern

I'm excited to introduce you to Marshall the Frog! He's fun, loving and always ready to hop at the thought of an adventure.

Marshall measures about 13 inches from eyes to feet and works up quickly. He's a sweet gift for a little one or perfect size to make up for a craft fair! If you would like a girl version you can find Mia here!

This is also a great alternative to using safety eyes as they are made with black yarn.

If you are new to amigurumi check out the tips and materials page to get you started!

Changing colors can be easy and nearly invisible with amigurumi. If you haven't done it before I have a picture tutorial below with the making of the eyes.

***You will insert your hook into the last stitch of the round for your color and draw a loop just as you would for a normal SC. When you yarn over to complete the stitch you will use your new color instead and pull through your two loops on your hook.

Your color change is complete! Make a slip stitch instead of a SC for your first stitch with your new color to keep it even smoother***

You may make and sell items made from this pattern but please do not sell, share or reproduce the actual pattern. If you sell finished items online (Etsy, etc) please provide a link to the pattern and credit to me as the designer. Thank you!

Let's get crocheting!

Materials:

  • Size 4 worsted weight yarn (I used 100g I Love This Yarn in Mid Green, 50g Soft Blue; you will also need a small amount of white, red for the cheeks and black yarn for the eyes/mouth)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors and tapestry needle
  • Stuffing (Poly-Fil and Morning Glory are my top favorites!)
  • Stitch markers

Abbreviations: US terminology

MC- Magic circle
SC- Single crochet
SC INC- Single crochet increase
DC INC- Double crochet increase
INV DEC- Invisible decrease
DC- Double crochet

*Slowly stuff as you go, you want it to be firm but not stretched. You will be working in the round, I like using a stitch marker at the beginning of each round.

Fasten off and sew remaining part closed, weave in your end

Note- If you don’t already use an invisible join you will want to for the eyes as the color change will be at the front and more noticeable.

Invisible color change: When switching from black to white complete round 2 up to the last stitch, you will start the last stitch with black but will finish it by pulling through with white instead. When making your first SC with new color complete a slip stitch instead of a SC, this will make the color change more seamless. Complete these steps again when changing to green.

Eyes- Make 2

With black yarn

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each stitch (12 SC), change to white
Round 3: SC in the first stitch, SC INC in the next, repeat around (18 SC) Change to green
Round 4: SC in the first 2 stitches, SC INC in the next, repeat around (24 SC)
Rounds 5-7: SC around (24 SC)
Round 8: SC in the first 2 stitches, INV DEC, repeat around (18 SC)
Round 9: SC in the first stitch, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (12 SC)
*Stuff before closing*
Round 10: INV DEC around (6 SC)

Fasten off and sew remaining portion closed, leave a long tail for sewing

Pass your yarn through to the bottom of the eye for sewing onto the head

Assembling the head- Sew the eyes onto the head starting each eye at round 5 and ending about round 8 (important part is having them even from each other, feel free to have yours closer together or further apart as you’d like)

Cheeks- Make 2

Create a magic circle with 12 HDC, slip stitch to the first HDC and fasten off with a long tail for sewing

Sew your cheeks on starting at row 12 and ending at row 15, even with the eyes (I spaced mine with 10 stitches in between)

*Picture below for reference

Smile- Ch 7 and fasten off leaving a tail. Using the picture above line up your smile and sew into place.

Arms- Make 2

*Lightly stuff the bottom of the arms only*
With green

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each stitch around (12 SC)
Round 3: SC in the first 3 stitches, SC INC, repeat around (15 SC)
Rounds 4-5: SC around (15 SC)
Round 6: SC in the first stitch, INV DEC, repeat around (10 SC)
Rounds 7-13: SC around (10 SC) Change to soft blue
Rounds 14-20: SC around (10 SC)

At the end of round 20 pinch the arm flat and make 5 SC across the top to close, fasten off and leave a long tail to sew onto the body.

Attaching everything together- Sew the head onto the body, making sure to have the facial features centered. Add extra stuffing as you go to keep it firm and less wobbly. Next sew the arms onto the body centered with the head at round 44.
