Every Tuesday this month we have shared a new pattern release. Last week we had the cutest Ragdoll Polar Bear Ornament pattern from Amanda and today I'm happy to share with you our new Zebra Ornament pattern!

Materials -
- Size 4 worsted weight yarn (40 yards of white, 25 yards black; small amount choice of color for scarf and cheeks)
- Yarn or twine to hang ornament (approx. 6 inches long)
- 3.5 mm crochet hook
- 9mm safety eyes
- Black crochet/embroidery thread for eyelashes/eyebrows
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Stuffing
- Stitch markers
Abbreviations - US terminology
MC- Magic circle
SC- Single crochet
SC INC- Single crochet increase
HDC – Half double crochet
INV DEC- Invisible decrease
Sl st – Slip stitch
St(s)- Stitch(es)
Rep – Repeat
Ch – Chain
NOTES -
- Slowly stuff as you go, you want it to be firm but not stretched.
- You will be working in the round; I like to use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round.
- The body and head will be made as one piece.
- When switching back and forth between colors in the round I recommend carrying your yarn colors instead of cutting and tying each change.
- Finished zebra ornament measures approximately 4.5 inches tall.
Changing Colors –
When working on the head we will be switching back and forth between black and white to give detail to our facial features. You will change to each color during the last half of your single crochet stitch.
1. When completing the last stitch before your color change, insert your hook into your stitch, yarn over with the first color and pull through.
2. Drop your first color and use your new color to yarn over and finish the stitch by pulling through all loops on your hook. You now have your new color on your hook.
Nose –
With black
Round 1: Create a MC with 6 SC
Round 2: SC INC in each st around (12)
Round 3: SC around (12)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. With white yarn create nostrils on either side between rounds 2 and 3.
Body –
With Black
Round 1: Create a MC with 6 SC
Round 2: SC INC in each st around (12)
Round 3: *SC in the first st, SC INC in the next*, *rep around (18)
Round 4: *SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next*, *rep around (24)
Round 5: *SC in the first 3 sts, SC INC in the next*, *rep around (30)
Change to white
Rounds 6-8: SC around (30)
Change to black
Round 9: *SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC in the next*, *rep around (24)
Round 10: SC around (24)
Change to white
Round 11: SC around (24)
Round 12: *SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next*, *rep around (18)
Round 13: SC around (18)
Change to black
Round 14: SC around (18)
Round 15: *SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next*, *rep around (12)
Change to white
*We will now start the head*
Round 16: *SC in the first st, SC INC in the next*, *rep around (18)
Round 17: *SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next*, *rep around (24)
Round 18: *SC in the first 3 sts, SC INC in the next*, *rep around (30)
(In rounds 19 and 21 we will be switching back and forth between black and white. B= Black and W=White)
Round 19: SC around (5W, 6B, 8W, 6B, 5W) (30)
Round 20: SC around in white (30)
Round 21: SC around (5W, 6B, 8W, 6B, 5W) (30)
The remaining rounds of the head will be completed in white.
Rounds 22-23: SC around (30)
Note: Here is where we will add the facial features before we start closing the head. Insert your safety eyes between rounds 21 and 22, 4 stitches apart.
Sew your nose piece centered between the eyes adding a small amount of stuffing as you go.
Optional: Add eyebrows/eyelashes.
Round 24: *SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC in the next*, *rep around (24)
*Continue to stuff the head firmly
Round 25: *SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next*, *rep around (18)
Round 26: *SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next*, *rep around (12)
Round 27: INV DEC around (6)
Fasten off and sew remaining part closed, weave in your end.
Ears –
With white make 2
Round 1: Create a MC with 6 SC
Round 2: SC around (6)
Round 3: *SC in the first st, SC INC in the next*, *rep around (9)
Round 4: SC around (9)
Fasten off leaving a long tail. With black yarn and tapestry needle pass through 2 times between rounds 2-4. With white yarn tail and tapestry needle fold your ear in half and pass through across the top of your stitches to close. Leave the remains of your tail for assembling later.
Mane –
With Black
Chain 16
Row 1: SC into the 2nd chain from your hook and in each chain across, chain 1 and turn (15)
Row 2: SC across, do not turn work (15)
Row 3: Chain 3, sl st into the same st, chain 3, sl st into the end of row 2, chain 3 and sl st into the end of row 1
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Scarf –
With color of choice ch 50, HDC in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across. Fasten off leaving a short tail for sewing.
Assembly –
- Sew the ears onto either side of the head at the 3rd-5th round from the top.
- Next, sew your mane centered between the ears and down the back of the head. Mane should end at the neck.
- Wrap the scarf around the neck and sew in place. Weave in your ends.
- Next, attach your twine or yarn to the top of your zebra.
- To make the tail cut 2 strands of black yarn approximately 7 inches long. Using your hook pass both strands through a stitch between the 5th and 6thround from the bottom. Create a braid approximately 1.5 inches long and secure with a knot. Trim to desired length. With your tapestry needle pull through the edge of your tail to create a ‘fuzzy’ edge. Optional: Sew or hot glue tail in place.
