I'm so excited to share this sweet skunk pattern with you today! Earlier this year I received a request from a member of our group to design a skunk pattern that she could make in memory of her mom who recently passed away. 

Making this pattern was extra special and I feel blessed that I could be a part of it! It brings me joy when crochet brings comfort to others and I hope that this pattern can do just that!

This little skunk also brought some big smiles with my girls. They were quite excited as each piece came together and they loved that it was a stuffie they had never had before!

When brainstorming I couldn't decide between having a standing body (like our llama pattern) or a sitting pattern similar to the ballerina bunch. I went a little in the middle. By stuffing the legs firmly she can stand, but still have a little bit of movement in her legs as she's played with.

Feel free to stuff the legs lightly if you'd prefer a sitting position! My favorite detail might just be the striping on her head and back. It's her signature skunk mark! Her tail is a close second!

While designing I couldn't decide on adding a floral crown or not. I love flowers and a boost of bold colors but once I put them on they covered the cute little button ears. I've included instructions below for the floral crown so that you can decide if you would like one!

Add some red cheeks (or no cheeks at all) for super cute boy version!

If you are new to amigurumi, this is a fun starter project. There is minimal sewing and only one color change throughout the pattern. You can also check out our tutorial page here to help get you started!

For this sweet skunk the body and head will be made as one piece, this means one less part to sew on later!

I've used plastic safety eyes below, if you would prefer an alternative these are my favorites! (I would recommend making the last round with another color of crochet thread if you would like it to show up a little more clearly against the black yarn.)

When using the specified hook and yarn size below this skunk measures about 14 inches tall in a standing position. Please keep in mind that everyone crochets with a different tension and this can slightly change your finished size.

You will want to crochet in good lighting as working with black yarn is hard to see the stitches or to see the rounds when sewing. I hope you have fun making your own skunk!

Notes - 

• Slowly stuff as you go, you want it to be firm but not stretched. You will be working in a continuous round; I recommend using a stitch marker at the beginning or end of each round.

Cheeks – Make 2

With pink create a magic circle with 7 HDC inside, pull tight to close and slip stitch to the first HDC. Fasten off with a long tail for sewing.

Nose –

With black

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each stitch (12)

Rounds 3-4: SC around (12)

Round 5: SC in the first stitch, SC INC in the next, rep around (18)

Round 6: SC around (18)

Round 7: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (24)

Round 8: SC in the first 9 sts, SC INC in the next 6 sts, and SC in each of the last 9 sts (30)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

With your grey yarn and tapestry needle; make a ‘V’ and pass through the top to create a reversed triangle. Pass through a few more times from the bottom center to the top until your nose is filled in.

Round 3: SC in the first stitch, SC INC in the next, rep around (18)

Lastly, sew your cheeks just outside of the nose on each side.

At the end of round 26 pinch the tail flat and make 9 SC across the top to close, fasten off and leave a long tail to sew onto the body.





Stripes –
With white, make 2

Chain 61, SC in the 2nd chain from your hook and into each chain across (60)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.



Assembly

1. Sew the ears onto either side of the head, starting at the 4th round and ending at the 9th round.

2. Next, sew on the arms at round 26.

3. Third, attach the legs covering a span of about 4 rounds. I sewed mine from rounds 3-6. Be sure each foot is facing forward as you sew. (Note: For firmer legs add a little bit of stuffing just before finishing.)

4. Almost done! Next, we will sew the stripes. (Optional: Use sewing pins to help hold each piece in place as you sew.) Line up both stripes side by side at the center top of the nose. Keep them side by side until you reach the top of the head. Give them a gradual part down the back of the head and body, bringing them together again at the lower back of the body.






5. Lastly, sew the tail onto the bottom center of the back. I sewed along the bottom of the tail as well as 1 inch up on each side to help hold its shape in an upward position.





Optional Floral Crown

Below are instructions if you would like to add a floral crown with leaves to your skunk. I used a 4-weight worsted yarn just as I did for the skunk. Very little yarn is needed in each color to complete. Feel free to mix up the colors!


Small Flower – Make 4

Chain 15

Row 1: HDC in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 2 and turn.

Row 2: Sl st into the first st, *ch 2, sl st in the next st*, *repeat across.

Fasten off leaving a long tail. Starting with one end slowly roll your flower into a circle. Using your tail, pass through the bottom 3-4 times to secure its shape. Leave enough of a tail for sewing onto your skunk. (Picture below.)






Leaves – Make 2

Round 1: Complete the following inside of a magic circle; SC, HDC, DC, TR, Ch 1, TR, DC, HDC, SC. Pull tight to close and secure with a slip stitch to the first SC.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.





Now time to sew your flowers and leaves onto your skunk! I placed a leaf on each side by the ears and centered my flowers between. Using pins will help hold them in place.
